Essential Oils for Sleep: Which Ones Actually Work?

Essential Oils for Sleep: Which Ones Actually Work?

If you've ever drifted off more easily after a lavender bath or felt calmer in a room with a diffuser running, you've already experienced the sleep-supporting power of essential oils. But with so many options available, it can be hard to know which ones are worth trying — and which are just pleasant smells.

Here's our evidence-informed guide to the best essential oils for sleep, and how to use them effectively.

Do Essential Oils Actually Help with Sleep?

Yes — with caveats. Essential oils are not a cure for chronic insomnia or sleep disorders, and they work best as part of a broader sleep hygiene routine. However, there is genuine research supporting the use of certain oils — particularly lavender — for reducing anxiety, lowering heart rate, and improving sleep quality.

Scent works directly on the limbic system (the brain's emotional centre), which is why it can shift your mood and nervous system state faster than almost any other sensory input.

The Best Essential Oils for Sleep

1. Lavender — The Gold Standard

Lavender is the most well-researched essential oil for sleep. Multiple studies have shown it reduces anxiety, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and improves sleep quality — particularly in people with mild insomnia. It's the obvious starting point for anyone new to sleep aromatherapy.

Best used as: Pillow spray, diffuser, or a few drops on a tissue tucked inside your pillowcase

2. Vetiver — The Deep Sleeper

Vetiver is less well-known but deeply effective for sleep. Its thick, earthy, smoky scent is profoundly grounding and sedating — it's sometimes called "the oil of tranquillity". It's particularly helpful for people whose minds race at night.

Best used as: Diffuser (use sparingly — it's very strong) or diluted and applied to the soles of the feet

3. Roman Chamomile — The Gentle Soother

Roman chamomile has a sweet, apple-like scent and is one of the gentlest oils available — making it ideal for children and those with sensitive systems. It eases anxiety and promotes a sense of calm without being sedating.

Best used as: Diffuser or diluted in a carrier oil for a bedtime massage

4. Cedarwood — The Grounding Oil

Cedarwood contains cedrol, a compound that has been shown to have sedative effects. Its warm, woody scent is deeply comforting and grounding — it creates a sense of safety and security that's conducive to sleep.

Best used as: Diffuser or diluted and applied to the chest or wrists

5. Bergamot — The Anxiety Reliever

Bergamot is a citrus oil with a unique twist — unlike most citrus oils (which are energising), bergamot is calming and anxiety-reducing. It's particularly helpful when sleeplessness is driven by stress or worry.

Best used as: Diffuser or bath (diluted in a carrier oil first)

6. Frankincense — The Mind Quieter

Frankincense slows and deepens the breath, which directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It's excellent for those who struggle to "switch off" mentally at bedtime.

Best used as: Diffuser during a pre-bed meditation or breathing practice

7. Ylang Ylang — The Heart Rate Lowerer

Ylang ylang has been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate — two key physiological markers of relaxation. Its rich, floral scent is intense, so use it sparingly.

Best used as: Diffuser (1–2 drops maximum) or blended with lavender to soften the scent

How to Use Essential Oils for Sleep

Diffuser

Add 3–5 drops to a diffuser and run it for 30–60 minutes before bed. Turn it off before you sleep — continuous diffusion throughout the night isn't necessary and can be overstimulating.

Pillow Spray

Mix 10 drops of lavender (or your chosen oil) with 100ml of water and a teaspoon of witch hazel in a small spray bottle. Spritz your pillow and bedding before sleep.

Bath

Add 5–8 drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil (such as sweet almond or jojoba) and add to a warm bath 1–2 hours before bed. Never add undiluted essential oils directly to bathwater.

Topical Application

Dilute 2–3 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to pulse points (wrists, temples, behind the ears) or the soles of the feet before bed.

Safety Notes

  • Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin
  • Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes
  • Some oils are not suitable during pregnancy — consult a qualified aromatherapist if in doubt
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Buy from reputable sources — quality varies enormously
